The Errigal Tweed Polo Coat
A toast to those who do one thing exceptionally well.
When we set out to make tailored clothing this season, we decided from the start that we would learn from experts. That meant working with people we admire – excellent manufacturers and weavers known precisely for their deep experience in one area of garment-making. With this in mind, a traditional polo coat had to be a part of our offering.
We developed the Errigal Tweed Polo Coat in partnership with Rochester Tailored Clothing to ensure that its American roots were ever-present. Historically worn in equestrian sport, and often regarded as a utilitarian piece of outerwear, the polo coat was quickly adopted by American dress as the standard coat for the cold.
The Errigal is complete with all the classic polo coat additions: double breasted construction with generous peak lapels, "postbox" side pockets, internal chest pockets, hand-sewn details, a martingale half-belt across the back – and our exciting touch, Magee of Donegal herringbone tweed.
Magee designs genuine Irish tweed, upholding its heritage techniques in practice since 1886. For centuries, the weaving tradition in the Irish county of Donegal grew into a craft that very few have mastered in the same way. The landscape is entirely unique to the place, inspiring the quality of the fabric and prioritizing the use of natural fibers.
Errigal is both a Donegal mountain and the quality of the black and grey herringbone fabric of our coat. It's almost entirely exclusive to the region in Ireland and a pleasure to wear for its contemporary edge and weather resistance.
A polo coat is unique for its natural position between casual and elegant. We enjoyed styling this with a sporty sweater, relaxed trousers, and a daily oxford button down. Truly, it's a jacket that remains steadfast in its authentic make but flexible for every-day wear.
