The American Trench Coat

We’re all inspired by something.

It was the late 1800s when the first trench coat came to fruition. It made a ubiquitous outer layer for the coming century.

We revealed the original American Trench Coat in 2010. A true project, the first of its kind, made in America. We set our sights on preserving the skill of manufacturers who learned to perfect this influential piece of outerwear.

The American Trench Coat is a waterproof trench coat made of unparalleled, 100% cotton Ventile cloth. The newest iteration, inspired by tradition and prompted by vintage references, emphasizes a comprehensive focus on detail – the new design’s greatest asset.

Ventile is made from natural fibers, not synthetic. Tightly woven with a dense structure, it will always maintain its weatherproof properties. When Ventile is wet, the cotton fibers swell, blocking out any moisture from seeping in. The trench is going to get better with age—softening and becoming more portable, even—with no effective loss. Function is built into the garment.

The American Trench Coat is built to bridge the seasons. It’s easy to say it can be the only jacket in a wardrobe – and its uniform texture in matte dark navy assigns elegance to a practical raincoat. That ulster collar with notch lapels reaches above the neck for full coverage when it gets torrential.

Smart enough for business casual days and honest enough for tees and denim, this timeless garment was proudly produced in Boston at a modern manufacturing facility known for its sophisticated premium outerwear.

Ventile cloth, first developed in England in 1943, continues to be the ultimate alternative to synthetic rainwear. Commissioned by Winston Churchill during WWII, Ventile was created to help RAF Pilots survive the change in temperature during shifting altitudes. It summited Mount Everest in 1953 too, proving to be a versatile and resistant outerwear material. Today, Ventile is woven in Switzerland and treated with a light coating of DWR for a modern twist and enhanced water resistance. The interior plaid lining is woven in North Carolina exclusively for American Trench from 100% cotton. Spot clean with a damp cloth.
