An overcoat with a distinctly American provenance.

The American Overcoat brings together parts of American garment-making into an illustration of domestic craftsmanship. American-made wool fabric and American-made tailoring in the same garment is increasingly rare. From American wool to a finished coat made in New York City’s Garment District, it’s a representation of what American manufacturing accomplishes at its highest level.

American Woolen of Stafford Springs, Connecticut, one of our closest factory partners, milled a substantial Brushed Melton cloth for us. The cloth is made with a plied construction to give it heft and body, while a brushed surface creates its distinctive hand. Its 19-micron wool comes from Shaniko sheep, raised in the Midwest, whose health and careful treatment produce the long-staple, strong fibers that give the cloth its exceptional quality.

We’re proud to say that this is our first garment made in New York City’s Garment District. Once a key region of American apparel manufacturing, the community of garment-makers has changed considerably over time. Skilled craftspeople continue to make apparel in the city, preserving generations of manufacturing knowledge with every garment.

The American Overcoat pairs the resilience of American wool with a remarkably soft hand, using a fabric that is both luxurious and built to last. The details draw from the Balmacaan tradition: raglan sleeves for ease of movement, a generous collar, removable belt, and simple slash pockets at the hips. Its relaxed proportions drape naturally over layers, giving the silhouette an encompassing quality and elegant presence.
